What are cheese spaetzle and where do they actually come from?

The exact origin of cheese spaetzle is somewhat disputed. However, it is most likely that they originated in the Swabian region of Baden Würtemberger in the 18th century and from there found their way to the Allgäu, Austria and Switzerland.
