Opened in 1872 as a spa theatre

Initially owned by theatre director J.M. Kotzky

Since 1918 owned by the municipality of Gmunden

The newly built Gmunden seasonal theatre opened in 1872. For the first few decades, it was owned by Salzburg theatre director J.M. Kotzky. In 1913, the municipality of Gmunden acquired the cinema licence and took over the operation of the cinema within the theatre building. In 1918, director Kotzky sold the seasonal theatre to the municipality of Gmunden. On 24 April 1931, the first sound film screening took place in the Gmunden City Theatre Cinema. In May 1949, the newly renovated Gmunden theatre building was opened with a festive academy.

In 1997, the biggest change to the theatre building to date was made. The part of the theatre facing the street was completely renovated. In addition, a small hall with state-of-the-art technology and interior design was created. It is mainly used as an arthouse cinema. Additional lighting with automatic control was installed in the stage area and the stage technical equipment was renovated. A small buffet was built into the theatre foyer and a bar was set up on the first floor.

The municipal theatre, which is over 150 years old, is the centre of cultural life in Gmunden and an architectural gem. It hosts a series of events of international calibre. It is home to many of Gmunden's cultural associations, a stage for guest performances, information evenings and panel discussions, offers cinema on a large screen and, if required, a glamorous location for balls, parties and private celebrations.
