Together with its brother, the Kleiner Ödsee, the Großer Ödsee is accessible from the Almtal via a hiking trail. Its charm as a natural jewel comes from its location on the one hand and its shape and the clarity of its water on the other. The result is a truly breathtaking interplay—especially when the landscape of the Totes Gebirge—the Schermberg and the northern slope of the Großer Priel, which form the impressive natural backdrop of the Ödsee—is reflected on the lake’s surface. The Großer Ödsee itself is characterized not only by its tranquil, forest-surrounded setting but above all by its countless coves and small islets. Thanks to this unique feature of the lake, there are many hidden nooks where the lake’s inhabitants can find places of refuge. A natural paradise whose charm is well worth a longer hike.
