She came on a cold, gray February day. Mathilde called to me silently, speechless, a loving shadow. She drew me forcefully yet gently into her time. A young woman in her thirties entered my life and stayed. Unexpectedly, I embraced her presence, followed her into her world …”* Spontaneously and unexpectedly, the author’s life path crosses that of Mathilde, a deaf young woman who, amid the turmoil of the 1920s, ends up in a psychiatric institution and is murdered in Hartheim in 1940.
