Scharnstein in the Almtal valley

The municipality of Scharnstein at the gateway of the inner Almtal shows a turbulent history as well as a lively presence. The castle ruin Scharnstein, high above the village offers spectacular views of the Almtal valley. You can visit the castle Scharnstein with its Austrian Crime Museum and the Scythes Museum Geyerhammer, both witnesses of a great past. The Austrian Romantic Road also passes through this village. Soft hills around Scharnstein invite you to take extensive hikes.

Many leisure time facilities, well marked hiking trails, like the path along Alm river “Genuss am Almfluss” with the activity-rest area, including a low rope course, a horseback-riding trail that runs along the Almtal, many equestrian facilities and riding and driving shows, a glider airfield and much more makes it easy to plan your stay.

Culinary delights, whether it’s “Kesselhoaße” (hot, fresh simmered sausages) or Zwieballn (a specially shaped and spiced bun), sweet Almtaler (chocolate covered cookies) or special venison dishes, they can all be found on the menu of the gastronomy in Scharnstein. Numerous farmers who cultivate our landscape also supply our enterprises with their local products.

Many well known businesses are securely established in Scharnstein: for example Grüne Erde - Wolf Systembau - ASMAG - cabinet maker’s like Lidauer, Wittmann and Feichtinger, Mayr Schulmöbel, just to name a few.
