Grünau in the Almtal valley

member of mountaineering villages

Grünau im Almtal, member of the "Bergsteigerdörfer" initiative has many superlatives: largest community of Upper Austria with a little over 230 km2 (the Principality of Liechtenstein has ca. 160 km2) and the province’s second highest mountain after the "Dachstein Mountain Range", the “Große Priel” with its 2515 m is also located here.

The beautiful little side valleys, for example the Hetzau, at the river Rinnbach, invite you for a hike. The Cumberland Wild Life Park and the path along the Alm river “Genuss am Almfluss”, offer year-round fun for families. On the mountain Kasberg you can hike the round tour “Kasbergalmrunde” in summer and ski at the family ski resort in winter.

And don’t suppose that is all Grünau has in store! There are: The Konrad-Lorenz research center, a beautiful church, a special “DU” stone, interesting events like summer-theatre, readings as well as echoing horn music at the lake Almsee, and Grünau is also one of the destinations of the Austrian Romantic Road.
