The Almsee is very rich in fish, partly covered with reeds, in which numerous wild poultry nest. Greylag geese often graze on the bank meadows, occasionally swarming in large flocks in the early morning. The lake is fed by numerous springs and small white water tributaries and drains the Almtal. The underground lake tributaries extend into the central parts of the Dead Mountains. Part of the above-ground tributaries of the Almsee also comes from the widely branched cave system. At the bottom of the lake there are funnel-shaped holes in the ground from which spring water flows into the lake. The deepest point of the lake is the so-called Seegrube (depth 9 m), otherwise the Almsee only reaches a maximum depth of 4.6 m. The riverside bog on the west bank of the Almsee still provides a sufficient opportunity for life for extremely rare plants. The most undemanding tree and shrub pioneers on this riparian zone include dead tree, black birch and red pine. The islands and riparian meadows around the lake are home to two types of calcareous bog that were classified as extinct in Upper Austria. The soft orchestras or the slender cotton grass have found a last refuge here.
The best way to reach the Almsee is by train and bus, or the beautiful Almuferweg "Genuss am Almfluss".
The Almsee is freely accessible all year round.
