Gassel stalactite cave - hiking fun for young and old
The cave is known for its rich stalactite deposits, whose colors range from pure white to yellowish to dark brown and are particularly beautiful thanks to the electric lighting. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful dripstone cave in the Northern Limestone Alps. The cave was discovered in 1918 and was declared a natural monument in 1931. Numerous animal bones were found in the parts of the cave near the entrance, including a complete skeleton of the now extinct cave bear.Opening hours: May 1 to September 15 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09:00-16:00.
In May and June, the cave can also be opened for a guided tour on a Thursday or Friday for schools or groups if booked in advance and the Gasselhütte is open.
The cave and hut are also open on the so-called "Zwickel Days" (Friday, May 30, June 20, 2025).
