Placing employees on the premises of a brewery has a long tradition. Starting with their apprenticeship, budding brewers often work in different breweries to learn the trade and deepen their expertise in practice. And rarely does one come from the immediate vicinity, because there are not that many people learning this particular profession. For these reasons, then, it is common for brewers to be used to moving around and to each move into a servants' flat.
At the private brewery Schloss Eggenberg, the brewmaster even has his own house, just a few steps away from the brewery. It is located above the entrance to the so-called Märzen cellar, which extends about 100 metres into a hill and where the ice cut in winter used to be stored. Its elevated position gives you an excellent view of the brewery grounds and makes it easy to see what's going on. In the background, the view extends to the nearby Traunstein and the neighbouring mountain scenery of the Tote Gebirge.
For several generations, this house has been home to master brewers during their time of service in Eggenberg. The current and active Thomas Lugmayr even liked it so much in Vorchdorf that he decided to create his own home in the village recently. The resulting "vacancy" has now been used to make the historic premises accessible to guests as a holiday flat. In the course of a careful adaptation, care was taken to preserve the "old" as much as possible: thick, cool stone walls, cracking and creaking wooden floors, original box-storey windows and, for tall people, quite challenging but rustic doorway and ceiling heights. The rooms are equipped with contemporary technology, with furniture in a combination of tradition and modernity, plus charming decorations that match the theme.
