Our fire brigade’s headquarters is the Safety Centre on Don-Alfonso-Weg, which opened in 2004. This is where we are based with our vehicles and equipment, alongside the neighbouring police station. At the heart of the centre is the operations centre, which houses the integrated district warning centre for the Gmunden district. In the event of a major incident, particularly severe storms, etc., all fire brigades in the district can be alerted at any time of the day or night via a warning and alarm system using radio, sirens and pagers. Normally, dialling the fire service emergency number 122 connects you directly to the Upper Austria Regional Warning Centre in Linz. From there, the relevant fire brigades are then alerted. Only in the event that the Upper Austria Regional Warning Centre becomes overloaded is the Gmunden District Warning Centre manned by two specially trained members of our brigade. Their task is then to dispatch the alerted fire brigades to the relevant incident locations, carry out alerts and follow-up alerts in accordance with the alert plans, coordinate special vehicles and specialist equipment, and, throughout all this, maintain a clear overview of the situation. It is also part of the District Emergency Coordination Centre’s remit, in the event of an emergency, to liaise with other emergency services such as the Red Cross, mountain rescue, the police, etc.
