More than 400 years ago the energy of the water was used there for the scythe industry, hence the name "Geyerhammer" of the new hydropower plant.
In 1994 the weir system was badly damaged by a flood and therefore had to be rebuilt in order to continue operations in the neighboring scythe-smith museum. The idea of using the water in the diversion canal to generate electricity after the rehabilitation of the weir was obvious, and this is how the Geyerhammer power plant came into being.
