Literature & Theater / Reading

“Every person has their path, and every path is correct.” (Thomas Bernhard)

Reading from the stories: The Cause. The Cellar. The Breath. The Cold.

The young Thomas Bernhard decides on his way to school from one moment to the next for a different, for the opposite direction. Instead of going to school, he goes to the unemployment office – it is a radical decision for his whole life.

The reading is based on Thomas Bernhard's autobiographical stories “The Cause,” “The Cellar,” “The Breath,” “The Cold”: The ruthless self-portrayal leads to ruthless self-knowledge. Mozart is the only glimmer of hope in the Salzburg world of young Bernhard, marked by splendor and misery.

Hermann Beil dedicates his reading to the memory of Dr. Harry Neubauer, President of the International Thomas Bernhard Society 2015–2017
