Linz Airport was officially opened in 1955, but it had already existed at the Hörsching site since 1939. In 2019, the airport decided to change its name from "blue danube airport" to "Linz Airport" as part of a modernisation offensive.
In spring 2021, a large part of the modernisation in the airport's passenger terminal was completed. A modern departure area was created with a new restaurant and a duty-free shop. In the course of the 4-track Westbahn extension of the ÖBB, a railway station is planned in the direct vicinity of the airport with a direct connection to the airport. Completion is expected in 2026 at the earliest.
