There is evidence that the art of baking was practised at Marktplatz 11 in Gmunden as early as 1587, though it is likely to have begun much earlier. For their part, the Reingruber family began baking bread in 1688 and acquired the house in Gmunden’s ‘Bäckerwinkel’ in 1827. Over the centuries, the bakery weathered the storms of history and the business was developed step by step. In recent years, one building project in the house followed another, and no sooner had one project been completed than everything was already too small again.
In 2019, following several years of planning, construction began on a new bakery in the neighbouring municipality of Pinsdorf. And so, on Saturday 23 May 2020, after almost half a millennium, the last pretzel sticks left the venerable old bakery at Marktplatz 11!
Since Monday 25 May 2020, 16 qualified bakers have been enjoying the wonderful working conditions in the new production building! They are all bringing the essence of centuries of baking expertise into a new era – and the 9th, 10th and 11th generations of the Reingrub family are right at the heart of it all!
