The name Viechtwang means spruce on the cheek, whereby cheek is to be understood as a slightly hilly, lovely area.
The church in Viechtwang was consecrated on December 27, 1157. The inauguration certificates still in existence today tell of the great festivity with Bishop Konrad von Passau. The church was consecrated to St. John the Evangelist, the parish patron still today, and St. Aegidius, whose name is celebrated on September 1st.
