Gassel stalactite cave

Ebensee, Oberösterreich, Österreich

Gassel stalactite cave - hiking fun for young and old

The cave is known for its rich stalactite deposits, whose colors range from pure white to yellowish to dark brown and are particularly beautiful thanks to the electric lighting. It is undoubtedly the most beautiful dripstone cave in the Northern Limestone Alps. The cave was discovered in 1918 and was declared a natural monument in 1931. Numerous animal bones were found in the parts of the cave near the entrance, including a complete skeleton of the now extinct cave bear.

How do you get to the cave? From the district of Rindbach, a well-marked path leads through the Rindbach valley, past the Rindbach waterfall natural monument to the cave at an altitude of 1226 m, which can be reached after a walk of around 2 3/4 hours. The return walk takes about 2 1/4 hours.
Visitors can also cycle most of the way to the gravel parking lot below the hut by mountain bike or e-MTB, from there it is only a good 30-minute walk to the Gasselhütte or the cave entrance.

The refuge (without overnight accommodation) is always open during the opening hours of the dripstone cave.

Opening hours: May 1 to September 13 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09:00-16:00.

In May and June, the cave can also be opened for a guided tour and the Gasselhütte can be catered for on a Thursday or Friday if schools or groups book in advance.
The cave and hut are also open on the so-called "Zwickel Days" (Friday, May 30, June 20, 2025).
