The Ebensee Museum of Contemporary History commemorates the political history of the Salzkammergut region between 1918 and 1955.
The Ebensee Contemporary History Museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the former Ebensee concentration camp (4 km away) and commemorates the political history of the Salzkammergut region between 1918 and 1955. As a regional museum with national and international partnerships, it focuses on the historical developments and events of the region in the context of ‘big history’. Far from idealised images of home, it shows the political conflicts of the camp culture of the First Republic, the history of persecution under National Socialism, the forms of resistance and the basic principles of dealing with the Nazi era.
House of History
The museum building on Kirchengasse houses a permanent exhibition, a library, an archive, a cafeteria and event rooms, and sees itself as an open house of history. Events, readings, academic lectures and conferences promote discourse for a broad audience. Part of the public representation is also the publication of the biannual magazine ‘betrifft Widerstand’ (concerns resistance) with articles on contemporary and regional history.
Education
Education is at the heart of the museum's activities. The Museum of Contemporary History and the Concentration Camp Memorial are memorial and learning sites offering a comprehensive range of educational programmes and projects that are used in work with school classes and young people from all over Austria.
Groups can book a guided tour of the museum followed by a visit to the memorial/memorial tunnel. Individual visitors can also purchase a combined ticket for the museum and memorial tunnel.
