Sing-Along 2027

Time and again during Lent, especially in the final days of Holy Week, the faithful make a pilgrimage to Calvary.
The chapel was built in 1696 by the“Brotherhood of the Agony of Christ”—a lay congregation promoted by the Jesuits.

Traunkirchen was home to the first Calvary in the Salzkammergut region. It is understandable that traditions from the Jesuit era are still preserved and kept alive among the people of Traunkirchen. In addition to the silence of the bells from Holy Thursday through Holy Saturday, there is “Adoration” from the evening service on Holy Thursday until midnight.

Starting at 9:00 p.m. on Holy Thursday, the faithful process through the town to sing the “Antlaßsingen.” “Antlaß” refers to fear—Christ’s fear of death.
At twelve different locations, the people are urged to remember Christ’s suffering and to turn away from sin.
A cantor announces each hour as the clock strikes: “Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you, the hammer has struck ….”
The choir joins in, commemorating the stations of the Passion:

At 9:00 p.m.: “Jesus is arrested...”
At 10:00 p.m.: “Jesus is condemned...”
At 11:00 p.m.: “Jesus is scourged...”
At 12:00 a.m.: “The Crowning with Thorns...”
At 1:00 a.m.: “Carrying the Cross...”
At 2:00 a.m.: “The crucifixion...”
At 3:00 a.m., as dawn breaks: “Behold Jesus, as he brings his earthly life to an end and sends his soul to the Heavenly Father.”

After returning from this final round through the town on Holy Thursday night, the “24 Hours” is sung—a 16-verse, ballad-like song recounting the Passion of Christ.
