Liachtbratl Monday at the Hofwirt

The days are getting shorter, the evenings longer—and that’s exactly when an old Upper Austrian tradition comes back to life: Liachtbratlmontag.

In the past, Liachtbratlmontag was the day when craftsmen needed artificial light in their workshops for the first time after the long summer months. During the summer months, they worked by daylight to save on lighting costs. With the money saved, the master craftsman treated his employees to a “Bratl”—and that’s how the name Liachtbratlmontag came about. Traditionally, it’s celebrated on the Monday after Michaelmas, September 29.

And because we at the Hofwirt love traditions, we’re bringing this lovely custom to our plates.
